A female Xylocopa chews a near-perfect round tunnel into dead wood at roughly a couple of centimetres a day, then partitions it into brood cells with walls of chewed pulp; the same gallery is often reused and extended by her daughters across generations.

Marine crabs release larvae that must develop at sea. Freshwater crabs skip that stage entirely — large yolky eggs hatch straight into miniature crabs, carried under the mother until they can walk — and that is what let the group colonise rivers, streams and hill forest far from any coast.
