What AnimalDex Does
AnimalDex helps users identify animals with AI analysis, save captures to a personal collection, participate in public discovery features, and use community features such as missions, trades, challenges, messages, reactions, reports, and blocks.
Information We Collect
We collect and use information needed to run AnimalDex and its core features.
- Account and profile data: Email address, Apple sign-in identifier, AnimalDex user ID, display name, username, avatar, bio, Instagram URL, authentication records, and account settings.
- Uploaded content and capture data: Animal photos and videos, capture metadata, notes, saved library records, public or shared capture data, species results, card details, rarity context, scores, stats, and related analysis outputs.
- Location data: GPS coordinates, approximate location, location labels, and environmental context when users scan animals or save captures with location features enabled.
- App activity: Credits, purchases, AnimalDex Pro status, subscription entitlement, missions, packs, trades, challenges, direct messages, reactions, reports, blocks, moderation history, and support activity.
- Device and diagnostic data: Device type, operating system, app version, crash logs, performance data, security events, and other diagnostics used to maintain and debug the service.
How We Use Information
AnimalDex uses information to:
- Create accounts, authenticate users, and support login.
- Analyze animal images and videos through backend services.
- Save captures, collections, libraries, cards, and user progress.
- Operate public discovery, community profiles, packs, missions, feeds, reactions, and shared captures.
- Enable direct messages, trades, challenges, blocks, and reports.
- Verify purchases, credits, subscriptions, and AnimalDex Pro entitlement.
- Moderate content, prevent abuse, protect safety, investigate reports, enforce policies, provide support, and debug technical issues.
- Improve reliability, security, and product quality.
Third-Party Processors
AnimalDex uses third-party service providers to operate the app. These providers process information only as needed to provide their services to AnimalDex.
- Supabase: Authentication, database, storage, Edge Functions, and backend infrastructure.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases, subscriptions, receipts, and Apple ID subscription management.
- OpenAI or another AI analysis provider: Animal identification and related AI analysis. AnimalDex sends analysis requests through backend services rather than exposing provider access directly from the app.
- Anthropic, Google (Gemini) and OpenAI: AI models that write the animals' replies in conversations and the short notes and summaries described below, through AnimalDex's backend.
- ElevenLabs: Spoken versions of animal replies, when a user plays one.
Public Content and Community Disclosure
Some AnimalDex features are public or shared by design. Public captures, shared animal photos or videos, profile fields, usernames, avatars, bios, Instagram URLs, pack activity, trade activity, challenge activity, reactions, and related community activity may be visible to other users.
Direct messages are intended for the participants in the conversation, but may be reviewed or retained when needed for reports, safety, abuse prevention, support, legal compliance, or service integrity.
Conversations with Animals
Users can talk with the animals in their collection, and with any animal on the website. Messages and replies are processed by the AI providers listed above to write each reply. Besides the chat history described below, AnimalDex's servers keep the notes and summaries described here, messages that animals send on their own, and the usage counts needed for daily limits.
-
What animals remember: To keep conversations personal, AnimalDex keeps short notes about what a user has told their animals, such as what they are working on. Users can see, correct or delete these notes in the app under "What I remember about you", or turn personalisation off.
-
What visitors see: When another user talks with an animal on someone's card, the animal can share a short summary of what its owner has worked on with it, and the Play records the owner lets that viewer see. Owners can turn this summary off under "What I remember about you". The owner's own conversations and notes are never shown to visitors.
-
What owners hear about visits: When a user talks with an animal on someone else's card, the animal tells its owner who visited and a short summary of what they asked about the owner or the animal. Visitors are told this in the conversation before anything they say is passed on. Summaries never include the visitor's exact words, insulting content, or anything the visitor asked the animal to keep between them, and nothing is passed on between users who have blocked each other. These summaries are deleted after 30 days.
-
Chat history on every device: When a signed-in user talks with an animal, AnimalDex stores that conversation (their messages and the animal's replies) in their account so it is there on each of their devices. Users can turn this off at any time under "Keep my chats on all my devices", delete a single chat or their whole chat history, and the history is deleted with their account. Voice calls, group conversations and debates are not stored this way, and chats on the website without an account stay only in that browser.
-
Age and AI consent: Before a user's first conversation, AnimalDex asks for their birth year (not their full date of birth) and for their agreement to send what they write to the AI providers listed above. We keep the birth year, and the date and version of that agreement, with their account, to set conversations up for their age:
- under 13, AnimalDex is not available: the account is closed and its data deleted;
- from 13 to 17, conversations run in teen mode, where the animals do not keep sensitive details in their notes and do not send messages first.
The birth year is private to the account. Without an account, the agreement is kept only in that browser.
-
Safety records: If a conversation suggests someone may be in crisis, the animal stops and shows helplines for their country. AnimalDex records only that this happened, with a short category and the date. The message itself is not stored in that record. See AI and Safety.
User Choices and Controls
Users can:
- Delete captures in the app.
- Block users.
- Report content or users.
- Delete their account in the app through Profile -> Settings -> Delete Account.
- Cancel subscriptions through Apple ID subscription settings.
- Decline optional device permissions, such as location or photo library access, although some features may not work without them.
Data Retention and Deletion
We retain account, capture, purchase, community, diagnostic, and operational data while an account is active and as needed to provide AnimalDex.
When a user deletes their account, AnimalDex deletes or deidentifies account data unless retention is required for legal compliance, fraud prevention, security, transaction records, dispute resolution, moderation records, abuse prevention, or other legitimate operational needs.
Some information may remain in backups or logs for a limited period before routine deletion. Public or shared content may be removed, deidentified, or disconnected from the deleted account depending on the feature and operational requirements.
Children
AnimalDex is not intended for children under 13. If our age check shows that a user is under 13, we close the account and delete its data, and that device or browser shows that AnimalDex is for ages 13 and up. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, contact [email protected] and we will delete it.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy as AnimalDex changes. When we do, we will revise the effective date on this page.
