AI and safety

Last updated: November 6, 2026

The animals you talk to on AnimalDex are AI. This page explains what that means, what happens to what you write, and how we look after people, including the moments that matter most.

The animals are AI

  • Every reply from an animal is written by an AI model, guided by what is known about how that species really lives.
  • Chats show an AI tag, and each conversation starts with a short notice that replies are AI-generated. If a conversation goes on for more than three hours, we remind you again.
  • The animals are not people, and they are not doctors, therapists, lawyers or financial advisers. They offer a different way to look at an idea, a plan or a decision. What you do with it is up to you.

What you write, and who processes it

  • Before your first conversation, we ask for your OK to send what you write to our AI providers so they can write the replies. You can keep using the rest of AnimalDex without agreeing.
  • Your messages are processed by the AI providers listed in our Privacy Policy (currently Anthropic, Google (Gemini) and OpenAI, plus ElevenLabs when you play a spoken reply), through AnimalDex's servers.
  • The animals can remember useful things you tell them, so they don't ask twice. You can see and delete what they remember in the app. We don't keep health details in that memory.

If you're going through something serious

  • If you might be in danger, or you're thinking about hurting yourself or someone else, please contact your local emergency number now.
  • When a conversation suggests someone may be in crisis, the animal stops being an animal. It doesn't give steps, start debates or suggest anything else; it replies calmly with helplines for the person's country, plus findahelpline.com for anywhere else.
  • When this happens we record only that it happened, with a short category and the date. We don't store the message in that record.

Ages

  • Under 13: AnimalDex isn't available. If the age check shows someone is under 13, we close the account and delete what's in it.
  • 13 to 17: conversations run in teen mode. The animals don't send messages first, don't remember sensitive details, and keep to stricter safety rules. A break is suggested after three hours.
  • We ask for your birth year once, before your first conversation, to set this up. It stays private to your account.
