June and July were the author's months, with late afternoon and dusk, roughly 4 to 8 pm, giving the most sightings and mornings best for birds.

About this place

This guide covers the northeast edge of Charlotte around University City, with a few sightings over the county line near Concord. The author found a mix of woodland and suburban wildlife: insects such as the Io Moth, Wheel Bug and Hackberry Emperor, reptiles and amphibians including the Eastern Rat Snake, Green Anole and American Toad, and familiar mammals and birds like White-tailed Deer, Eastern Cottontail and Carolina Wren. All sightings were made in June and July, with most in July. Afternoon and dusk were the most productive times, especially around 6 to 8 pm, when deer, rabbits, snakes and spiders turned up. Birds such as the Eastern Phoebe and American Robin were seen in the morning. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has watched wildlife here, not a tour. You get the author's notes for each species and can message the author with questions about timing and habitat. Sightings are never guaranteed.Read more
