Lampung, at Sumatra's southern tip, has two of the island's great national parks. Way Kambas on the east coast is the place to see Sumatran elephants and the only place to see a Sumatran rhinoceros, at its sanctuary. Bukit Barisan Selatan in the west holds tigers, tapirs, siamang, sun bears and great argus pheasants. Kiluan bay on the south coast has dawn spinner dolphin trips, and the coast toward Krui has nesting green turtles.
Lampung is a short ferry from Java and feels like a different island. Transmigrant farmland covers the lowlands, but the two national parks that bracket the province still hold the full Sumatran large-mammal set: elephant, rhino, tiger, tapir and sun bear.
Way Kambas is the easy park, flat and close to Bandar Lampung, with elephants you will see and a rhino sanctuary you can visit by arrangement. Bukit Barisan Selatan is the hard park, steep and wet, where the reward is pheasants, gibbons and tiger tracks rather than guaranteed sightings.
The Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Way Kambas is the only captive breeding facility for the species and has produced calves; the handful of animals there are the most important rhinos in Asia.
Kiluan bay's spinner dolphin pods are among the largest regularly seen from the Sumatran coast, and the small fishing community runs the boats itself.
