Herping Field Journal

Turn every herp find

Into part of your Dex.

Photograph snakes, lizards, frogs and other herps, identify what you found, track your collection and bring eligible past Instagram finds with you.

Some herps are indexed at group level when a species-level card is not the honest catalog result. AnimalDex will not invent a species name to look more precise.

Herping Field Journal

Overview

Built for this journey

01

Log field finds without flattening them

A snake on a warm road, a gecko on a guesthouse wall, a frog after rain — those are different records. AnimalDex keeps identification, setting, and a confirmed location with the original photo or clip.

When the catalog indexes a lookalike group instead of a species, that is preserved. Precision you cannot support is not added for the sake of a cleaner card.

02

Build a reptile and amphibian life list

Herpers already think in lists. AnimalDex turns that herp life list into a Dex you can browse, compare, and keep public on a profile if you choose.

Snakes, lizards, frogs, and other amphibians sit in one collection. Past Instagram posts can join the same list after you confirm species and the historical place of the find.

03

Night herping and photo-first notes

A lot of herping happens after dark, on roads, or in short windows after rain. Get a record from a safe distance, then move on. The journal is for the find, not for crowding the animal until it poses.

Field context that AnimalDex stores with a capture includes setting (wild, zoo, farm, domestic) and a location you confirm as historical — not the GPS of the kitchen table where you finally upload. Captions and trip names are hints, not coordinates.

04

Bring old Instagram finds into the same Dex

New finds still start with a live capture. Past encounters live on Instagram until you review them in. Years of night herps often live as Instagram posts. Connect a compatible professional account, review the snake, lizard, or frog, and confirm the historical place of the find. Original eligible media becomes part of the same herp life list as tonight’s live captures.

Imported posts help build the collection. They do not add qualifying live-capture wildlife signals for Creator Rewards.

05

Document finds without disturbing wildlife

Do not pin, flip, or bait an animal for a cleaner angle. Road cruising still means the animal's safety first, including when you stop the car.

A structured journal makes it easier to remember what you already found so you are not repeating pressure on the same stretch of road or the same individual.

Why AnimalDex

Kenapa AnimalDex berbeda

A herping journal should keep location history without treating GPS as a substitute for where the animal actually was.

Ethical field behaviour is framed as technique: distance, no harassment, no baiting for a photo.

Instagram archives from years of night herps can enter the same collection after review.

Questions

Pertanyaan umum

Is AnimalDex a snake identification authority?

+

No. It is an educational collection app. Never handle wildlife based on an app result, and treat venomous species with full field caution.

Can I bring old herping Instagram posts into AnimalDex?

+

Yes, from a compatible Instagram professional account. You still confirm species and a historical location before import.
