The author's sightings were all in August, mostly mid-afternoon in the woods and late afternoon to dusk along the shore.

About this place

This guide covers two contrasting settings on the Dartmouth side of Halifax Harbour. Along the coast at Eastern Passage and the McCormack's Beach area, the author found a harbor seal in the water, cunner over rocky bottoms, shore crabs, periwinkles in the intertidal zone and herring gulls. Inland, around Shubie Park and its lakes and woodland, there were chain pickerel, mallards, a dark-eyed junco, eastern chipmunk, American red squirrel, moths and a wolf spider. All sightings came from two days in August, mostly in the afternoon and into dusk, between about 1 pm and 6 pm local time. Woodland and freshwater species turned up mid-afternoon, while the coastal animals were mostly seen late afternoon and early evening. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has been there and logged these sightings with photos. It is not a tour, and the author will not be with you. You get the author's notes for each species and can message the author with questions about timing, habitats and how they found things. Wildlife is wild, so sightings are never guaranteed.Read more
