About this place

The countryside around Prattville in Autauga County, central Alabama, mixes woodland, field edges and quiet rural roads close to the Alabama River. The author logged five species here: a giant whip scorpion, a bald-faced hornet, an eastern cottontail, a fox squirrel and a white-tailed deer, mostly in wooded grounds and along a forest edge beside a rural road. All sightings came between July and September. Most were at dawn, around 6 to 7 in the morning, with one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon. Early starts paid off for mammals and for the whip scorpion, which was found before the day heated up. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has watched wildlife here, not a tour. You get the author's notes on each species and can message the author with questions about timing and habitat. Wildlife is unpredictable, and sightings are never guaranteed.Read more
