Gunung Leuser is the only place on earth where orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos still share one forest. Visitors at Bukit Lawang and Ketambe reliably see Sumatran orangutans, Thomas's leaf monkeys, siamang, macaques, hornbills and monitors. Sun bears, great argus pheasants, flying dragons and colugos are realistic with time. Tigers, elephants and Sumatran rhinos are present across the park's 8,000 km2 but encountered by almost no one.
The park spans the border of North Sumatra and Aceh and anchors the Leuser Ecosystem, the largest intact forest left on Sumatra. Its eastern gateway at Bukit Lawang is a guesthouse village on a clear river; its northern gateway at Ketambe in Aceh is a research station with far fewer visitors and more fully wild apes.
Treks here are hot, steep and slippery, and the forest is dense enough that most of what lives in it stays unseen. The point is the orangutans, which are seen on the great majority of walks, and the sounds and sign of everything else.
Kenapa lokasi ini penting
Halaman lokasi yang baik menjelaskan kenapa tempat ini layak dikunjungi, bukan hanya nama-nama yang cocok dimasukkan ke checklist destinasi.
Leuser is the last stronghold of the Sumatran orangutan, with the majority of the species' 14,000 or so remaining individuals, and the only remaining place where all four Sumatran megafauna species coexist.
The park is under constant pressure from roads, palm oil and a proposed geothermal plant, and visitor fees at Bukit Lawang and Ketambe are a real part of the argument for keeping it standing.

Tips spotting
Tips ini dibuat agar halaman ini benar-benar berguna di lapangan, bukan hanya enak dibaca di layar.
- 01Choose a licensed guide who refuses to feed orangutans and keeps you ten metres back; the semi-wild females at Bukit Lawang can be aggressive when fed.
- 02Ketambe sees far fewer visitors and the orangutans there are fully wild; allow an extra day for the longer journey from Medan.
- 03Camp at least one night in the forest; dusk and dawn at camp bring mouse-deer, colugos, hornbills and the gibbon chorus.
- 04Wear long trousers and leech socks; the forest floor is leech country, especially after rain.

What wildlife is there in Gunung Leuser National Park?
Sumatran orangutans, siamang, Thomas's leaf monkeys and macaques; sun bears; rhinoceros, helmeted and other hornbills; great argus pheasants; flying dragons, colugos, mouse-deer and monitors; and the unseen giants, Sumatran tigers, elephants and rhinos.
What animals can be found in Gunung Leuser?
On a typical two-day trek from Bukit Lawang you can expect orangutans, macaques, Thomas's leaf monkeys, hornbills, monitors and the sound of siamang. Sun bear sign, argus calls and flying dragons are regular; tigers, elephants and rhinos are not.
Bukit Lawang or Ketambe?
Bukit Lawang is easier to reach, busier and nearly guarantees orangutans, some of them habituated. Ketambe is a longer journey into Aceh, quieter, and its orangutans are entirely wild; it suits a second visit or anyone who wants fewer people.
Is Gunung Leuser safe to trek?
With a licensed guide, yes. The risks are heat, slippery trails and leeches rather than animals. Keep distance from orangutans and macaques, carry water, and do not trek alone.
