Botswana is elephant and water country. Chobe's riverfront holds the densest elephant population in Africa, the Okavango Delta's channels are full of hippos, crocodiles, red lechwe and fish eagles, and Moremi is one of the best places on the continent for African wild dogs and leopards. In the dry Makgadikgadi pans you can sit with habituated meerkats and watch southern Africa's largest zebra migration.

Botswana chose low-volume, high-value tourism and kept most of its wilderness unfenced, so the animals still move on their old routes. The Okavango floods from the Angolan highlands, arriving in the dry season when everything else is parched, and the game concentrates on its edges. Explore it from a mokoro, a poled canoe at water level, and the hippos, kingfishers and jacanas are at eye height.

Chobe in the north-east is the elephant river: in the late dry season herds of hundreds come down to drink and swim in the late afternoon, best seen from a boat. The Kalahari side is different again, with black-maned lions, brown hyenas and the meerkat colonies of the Makgadikgadi salt pans.

Kenapa lokasi ini penting

Halaman lokasi yang baik menjelaskan kenapa tempat ini layak dikunjungi, bukan hanya nama-nama yang cocok dimasukkan ke checklist destinasi.

Botswana holds about 130,000 elephants, roughly a third of all that remain in Africa, and the Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage wetland that has stayed almost pristine. Seeing both is seeing the continent's wildlife as it was.

It is also the stronghold of the African wild dog, Africa's most endangered large carnivore, with Moremi and the Linyanti among the few places where packs are seen regularly rather than by luck.

  1. 01Combine a dry-land camp in Moremi or Khwai with a water camp in the inner Delta; the species lists are very different.
  2. 02Take the afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe from Kasane between August and October for the elephant swims.
  3. 03From a mokoro, stay quiet and low; the poler will show you painted reed frogs, jacanas and sitatunga tracks you would never see from a vehicle.
  4. 04Khwai and the Linyanti allow night drives, which is when the honey badgers, civets and genets appear.

What wildlife is there in Botswana?

Elephants in huge numbers, hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, red lechwe, sitatunga and over 590 bird species including fish eagles, carmine bee-eaters and Pel's fishing owl. The Kalahari adds meerkats, brown hyenas and black-maned lions.

What animals can be found in Botswana?

The Big Five minus abundant rhino (small reintroduced populations exist), plus Botswana specialities: red lechwe and sitatunga in the Okavango, African wild dogs in Moremi, the Makgadikgadi zebra migration and habituated meerkats on the salt pans.

When is the best time to visit the Okavango Delta?

June to October, when the flood is high but the land is dry, so animals crowd the water and mokoro trips run everywhere. November to March is hot and wet with newborn animals and migrant birds, and the zebra are on the Makgadikgadi pans.

It is one of the best countries in Africa for them. Moremi Game Reserve, the Khwai concession and the Linyanti hold resident packs, and June to August, when they den, gives the most predictable sightings.
