The Togeans are a scatter of forested islands in the middle of Tomini Gulf, Central Sulawesi, reached by slow ferry from Ampana or Gorontalo. They have coconut crabs on the beaches at night, the Togean babirusa and knobbed hornbills in the forest, a stingless jellyfish lake at Mariona on Togean island, and reefs with turtles, dugongs, reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish and some of the healthiest coral in Sulawesi.
Togean Islands National Park covers the whole archipelago: Batudaka, Togean, Talatakoh, Una Una and Walea Kodi, plus hundreds of islets. There is no mobile signal on most islands and electricity runs a few hours a night, which is the point.
Homestays on Kadidiri, Bomba and Malenge run snorkel and dive trips to atoll walls, the B24 bomber wreck and the Una Una volcano reefs. Bajau sea-nomad villages sit on stilts over the shallows at Pulau Papan and Kabalutan.

Tomini Gulf is the largest gulf in Indonesia and the Togean reefs have escaped much of the bleaching and blast fishing that hit Sulawesi's mainland coast.
