How to identify a Blood Parrot Cichlid
- Deep, rounded body with a humped nape
- Small beak-like mouth held permanently open
- Large, prominent eyes
- Solid orange to red colouring in adults
- Grows to about 20 centimetres long
Why Blood Parrot Cichlid are interesting
- Breeders have never confirmed the parent species, which are thought to be Central American cichlids.
- Young fish are grey-brown with dark blotches and turn orange as they grow.
- Some are injected or dipped in dye to be sold as blue, purple or green fish; the colour fades and the process harms the fish.
- It has no scientific species name of its own because it is a cross rather than a natural species.
- Heart-shaped individuals in the trade have had the tail fin removed when young, a practice widely criticised on welfare grounds.

05
Why this diet?
An omnivore fed on sinking cichlid pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp and krill. The narrow mouth makes it a clumsy feeder that often needs several attempts to take a piece, and food is ground up by teeth in the throat.
06
Activity, rest, and lifespan
Active by day under tank lighting. At night it settles on the bottom or inside a cave, and its colour often pales until the lights return.
Typically 10 to 15 years in a well-kept aquarium; there is no wild lifespan to compare.
07
Blood Parrot Cichlid reproduction
Pairs clean a flat stone or cave wall, and the female lays a batch of sticky eggs which both fish guard and fan. Males are usually reported to be infertile, so most clutches fail and turn white with fungus; females paired with males of other cichlids can produce fry.
The sexes look much alike. Males tend to be slightly larger, and at breeding time the female's egg tube is short and blunt while the male's is narrower and pointed.
08
Predators, threats, and defense
Tank-mates are the only animals that threaten it. Larger, more aggressive cichlids bully and injure it, and its weak bite gives it little defence, so it retreats into a cave or behind rockwork when harassed. Poor water quality is a further danger.
