Why this diet?
Chews the leaves of a wide range of broad-leaved plants, including ragweeds and wild sunflowers, which it is often reported to favour, as well as grasses. In farmland it also eats soybean, alfalfa, cotton and other crop foliage.

Activity, rest, and lifespan
Feeds by day, most actively in warm sunshine. At night and in cool weather it rests clinging to upright stems and leaves, often well above the ground.
One generation a year. Nymphs take roughly six to eight weeks to mature, and adults usually live until killed by autumn frost, about two to three months.

Differential Grasshopper reproduction
Females push the abdomen into firm soil along field margins and ditch banks and lay pods of several dozen eggs, often more than fifty, and may lay several pods through late summer and autumn. The eggs overwinter and hatch in late spring; nymphs pass through five or six instars, with no parental care.
Females are noticeably larger and heavier, with short pointed digging valves at the tip of the abdomen. Males are smaller, and the tip of the abdomen is blunt and turned up.

Predators, threats, and defense
Birds, robber flies, spiders, rodents and parasitic flies take nymphs and adults, and blister beetle larvae eat buried egg pods. It escapes with a long jump and a short flight, and may bring up brown fluid from its mouth when seized.
