Why this diet?
Mostly insects: wood-boring beetle grubs, ants and caterpillars. In winter it pecks open goldenrod galls for the fly larva inside, and takes berries, acorns, and suet and sunflower seeds at feeders.

Activity, rest, and lifespan
Strictly a daytime bird. Each one sleeps alone in a tree cavity, and in autumn it chisels out fresh holes to use as winter roosts.
Most live only a few years. Banding records include a male that was at least 11 years old when recaptured.

Downy Woodpecker reproduction
Both sexes excavate the nest hole in dead wood, which takes one to three weeks. The clutch is 3 to 8 white eggs, incubated for about 12 days by both parents. Nestlings leave at about three weeks.
Males have a small red patch on the back of the head, which females lack. Recently fledged young of either sex may show red on the crown instead.
