Best time

The author found birds here in July around 5 pm at dusk, so a winter late-afternoon visit is a good starting point.

About this place

Carroll Nature Reserve sits in Kingaroy in Queensland's South Burnett region. The author's sightings here are mostly waterbirds: Australasian Swamphen, Pacific Black Duck, Mallard and Muscovy Duck, along with a group-living bush bird, the Apostlebird. It is a small, easy reserve for a short walk rather than a full day out. All five sightings came from a single visit in July, around 5 pm at dusk. Winter late afternoons were productive for the author, with birds active around the water before dark. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has been there, not a tour. You get the author's notes on each species and can message the author with questions about timing and what to look for. Sightings are never guaranteed, and conditions change with season and water levels.Read more
