About this place
The mangrove fringe of Angke Kapuk on Jakarta's north coast holds a surprising amount of life for a city edge. The author logged eight species here: an Asian water monitor in the mangrove swamp, waterbirds such as the Javan pond heron and common sandpiper along the water, the Javan myna, and insects including the tropical carpenter bee, Asian weaver ant and a mud dauber wasp. A mandarin duck was also seen, which is not native to Java and is most likely a kept or escaped bird. All sightings came from two days in April and May, mostly in the afternoon between about 13:00 and 16:00, with insects active around midday and birds and the monitor seen mid to late afternoon. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has already been there, not a tour. You get the author's notes for each species and can message the author with questions about timing and where to look. Sightings are never guaranteed.Read more
