The author's sightings were all in July around midday, when ponds and village gardens were easy to explore on foot.

About this place

Cangkuang is a highland district south of Bandung in West Java, a mix of villages, rice fields, fish ponds and gardens below the volcanic hills. The author's sightings here are of common species that live alongside people: a giant African land snail in village greenery, goldfish in a freshwater pond and house flies in a built-up area. All three sightings were made over two days in July, each around 1 pm. July falls in the drier season in West Java, and the author's records show that even a short midday walk through the village turns up animals worth a closer look, especially around ponds and damp garden edges. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has been there, not a tour. You get the author's notes on each species and can message the author with questions about the area. Sightings are never guaranteed, and what you find will depend on weather, season and luck.Read more
