July and August worked for the author, with insects in late afternoon around 4 to 5 pm, deer in late morning and spiders at night.

About this place

Kalona is a small town in southeast Iowa, set in farm country near the English River. The author's sightings here come from gardens, wooded edges and the town and its suburban fringe: a Chickweed Geometer Moth and a Monarch Butterfly among flowers and low growth, a Dark Fishing Spider in town after dark, and a White-tailed Deer near homes on the edge of town. The author visited on three days in July and August. Insects turned up in late afternoon and early evening, around 4 to 5 pm, the spider was found at night around 10 pm, and the deer was seen in late morning. Summer here rewards slow looks at flowering plants by day and a torch walk after dark. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has been there, not a tour. You get the author's notes for each species and can message the author with questions about timing and where to look. Wildlife comes and goes, so sightings are never guaranteed.Read more
