Liguria is Italy's whale coast. The Pelagos sanctuary starts a few miles off Genoa, and summer boat trips from Genoa, Savona and Imperia routinely find fin whales, sperm whales and striped dolphins. On land the Cinque Terre terraces are full of wall lizards, wild boar and peregrines, the Portofino marine reserve has octopus and seabream in clear water, and the Ligurian Alps behind Imperia hold wolves and chamois.
Most Liguria captures come from inside the Genoa Aquarium: sturgeon, zebra sharks, leopard sharks, amberjacks and reef fish. Outside it users have logged yellow-legged gulls on the harbour, wall lizards and a Kuhl's pipistrelle in the lanes, and darters over hill ponds, which is a fair picture of a coastal city with mountains straight behind it.
Genoa itself is the base for the whale boats and the aquarium. The Cinque Terre and Portofino are day trips east, and the Alpi Liguri park is an hour inland from Imperia on the French border.
The Pelagos sanctuary is the Mediterranean's only international marine protected area, created by Italy, France and Monaco in 1999 for its cetaceans. Fin whales feed here in summer on krill brought up by the Ligurian current.
The Ligurian Alps are also the corridor wolves used to walk from Italy into France in the early 1990s, and the Alpi Marittime and Alpi Liguri parks still hold packs alongside chamois and reintroduced ibex.
