Meet the real Ocean Sunfish

Mola mola

Ocean Sunfish teaches Odd Thriving through a giant disk-shaped fish that makes strangeness seaworthy. Flattened body, surface basking, deep dives, and jellyfish feeding show design does not need apology.

How to recognize it

Huge flattened body with no ordinary tail shape
Swimming powered mainly by dorsal and anal fins
Surface basking after deep or cool-water movement

Diet: Jellyfish, salps, squid, small fish, crustaceans, and gelatinous prey.
Lifespan: Not known for wild fish. Aquarium animals have lived about 10 years, and growth studies suggest that wild sunfish may exceed 20.
Predators and threats: Sea lions, orcas, sharks, parasites, boat strikes, plastic, and fishing bycatch threaten sunfish. Surface basking helps with warming and parasite attention but also exposes them.
