How Cosmog compares to the real Moon Jellyfish

Cosmog's official category is the Nebula Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Moon Jellyfish as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Cosmog is a gaseous nebula creature, mostly a cosmic design; its floating, translucent body is closest to a moon jellyfish drifting through water. It is weightless and drifts, the closest real-life parallel to a floating cloud.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Cosmog is a fictional Pokémon, while the Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) is a real marine invertebrate. On AnimalDex the real Moon Jellyfish scores 5 for dominance, 8 for speed, 12 for size and 3 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is size.

Official category: Nebula Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Moon Jellyfish

Meet the real Moon Jellyfish

Aurelia aurita

About 95 per cent water, this shallow-belled jellyfish, usually 10 to 40 centimetres across, has no brain, heart or blood. A net of nerves and eight sense organs spaced round the bell margin, each with a balance sensor and simple light-sensitive spots, keep it upright and set the beat of its swimming.

How to recognize it

  • Four horseshoe-shaped rings visible through the top of the bell
  • Translucent bell, faintly tinged blue, pink or white
  • Short fringe of hundreds of fine tentacles round the rim

Real Moon Jellyfish facts

  • Its sting is too weak to pierce most human skin and is usually felt as nothing more than a mild tingle.
  • Each polyp, fixed to rock, shell or a harbour wall, splits into a stack of tiny discs that swim off as young jellyfish.
Diet
Tiny plankton, larvae, and suspended particles.
Lifespan
The swimming medusa usually lives a few months to about a year, often dying after spawning. The attached polyp can survive for years.
Predators and threats
Sea turtles, sunfish, anemones, and other jelly predators threaten them. Transparency and drifting are soft defenses.
