How Dhelmise compares to the real Decorator Crab

Dhelmise's official category is the Sea Creeper Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Decorator Crab as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Dhelmise is a possessed anchor wrapped in seaweed, mostly an object design; the decorator crab, which covers itself in seaweed and debris, is the closest real comparison.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Dhelmise is a fictional Pokémon, while the Decorator Crab (Camposcia retusa) is a real marine invertebrate. On AnimalDex the real Decorator Crab scores 10 for dominance, 8 for speed, 4 for size and 20 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is intelligence.

Official category: Sea Creeper Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Decorator Crab

Meet the real Decorator Crab

Camposcia retusa

A small spider crab whose body and legs are covered in hooked bristles that grip like hook-and-loop fastening. It snips off pieces of sponge, algae and hydroids and fixes them on, until the crab looks like a slowly moving tuft of reef growth.

How to recognize it

  • Pear-shaped body almost entirely hidden under attached growth
  • Long thin legs, also coated with fragments
  • Claws slender and shorter than the long walking legs

Real Decorator Crab facts

  • Much of what it wears stays alive, so sponges and algae can keep growing on its back.
  • The covering is shed with the old shell at each moult, so the crab has to cover itself again.
Diet
An omnivorous scavenger and grazer that picks small invertebrates, algae and organic scraps from rubble and sponges with its slender claws, feeding mostly at night.
Lifespan
Captive and wild lifespan for Camposcia retusa both lack published numbers. The crab hooks sponges and debris onto hooked setae for cover.
Predators and threats
Fish and octopuses hunt it. When threatened it freezes and relies on its covering, which is hard to tell from the surrounding reef.
