How Dondozo compares to the real Wels Catfish

Dondozo's official category is the Big Catfish Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Wels Catfish as a strong match, meaning the design reads directly as this animal. Dondozo is officially the Big Catfish Pokémon, with a huge gaping mouth and whiskers. The wels catfish, Europe's giant catfish, matches that enormous mouth and bulky body.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Dondozo is a fictional Pokémon, while the Wels Catfish (Silurus glanis) is a real fish. On AnimalDex the real Wels Catfish scores 64 for dominance, 33 for speed, 58 for size and 36 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is dominance.

Official category: Big Catfish Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Meet the real Wels Catfish

Silurus glanis

Wels Catfish teaches Deep Economy through a giant river predator saving motion until the signal comes close. Barbels, smell, vibration sensing, huge mouth, and deep-channel cruising make strength economical.

How to recognize it

Large freshwater predator with massive mouth
Long barbels used for sensing in murky water
Low-light and deep-channel hunting style

Diet: Fish, crayfish, frogs, birds, rodents, carrion, and shoreline animals.
Lifespan: Many live 15 to 30 years, and ages beyond 30 have been reported for very large fish. Claims of 50 years or more are poorly supported.
Predators and threats: Young face larger fish, birds, otters, and cannibalism; adults mainly face humans and habitat change. Size eventually protects, but deep cover and sensing matter before dominance arrives.
