Real animal: West African Manatee

Dragonite is a dragon, so it has no exact real-animal counterpart. Unlike most dragons, though, it is friendly, round and soft-looking, with small wings, short antennae and a large belly.

Its evolution line points to a water creature. Dratini and Dragonair are long, serpentine dragons that live in water, which suggests a sea serpent or a long-bodied water animal such as an eel or sea snake. Dragonite itself is often compared to the Loch Ness Monster and to sea serpents in sailors' tales, and its Pokédex entries describe it rescuing people at sea.

Some fans see a seal or sea lion in its rounded face and gentle expression, and its small wings look more like a bird's than a bat's.

The fairest answer is that Dragonite is a friendly sea-dragon design. No real animal matches its body well; the nearest living comparison is the West African manatee below, a gentle, round-bodied sea mammal that sailors' sea-monster tales are often traced to.

How Dragonite compares to the real West African Manatee

Dragonite's official category is the Dragon Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the West African Manatee as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Dragonite is a friendly sea dragon with a round belly, tiny wings and a habit of rescuing people at sea. The manatee, a gentle, round-bodied sea mammal linked to sailors' sea tales, is the nearest real comparison.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Dragonite is a fictional Pokémon, while the West African Manatee (Trichechus senegalensis) is a real animal. On AnimalDex the real West African Manatee scores 48 for dominance, 25 for speed, 65 for size and 48 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is size.

Official category: Dragon Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Real West African Manatee facts

  • Its cheek teeth are replaced throughout life: new ones form at the back of the jaw and move forward as worn front teeth drop out.
  • Small nails sit at the tips of its flippers, which it uses to push along the bottom and handle plants.
Diet
It eats aquatic plants, mangrove leaves, grasses, and occasional crops or invertebrates. A muscular, bristled upper lip gathers the plants, and in some areas it enters flooded rice fields; clams have been recorded in its diet in parts of the range.
Lifespan
It can live for several decades if protected from human threats. Few wild animals have been aged, so figures are rough; about 30 years is a commonly quoted estimate.
Predators and threats
Hunting for meat and oil, drowning in fishing nets, boat strikes, dams that cut off or strand river populations, and mangrove clearance are the main dangers. Crocodiles are thought to take some calves. It avoids people by staying submerged in murky water and moving off quietly.
