How Durant compares to the real Bullet Ant
Durant's official category is the Iron Ant Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Bullet Ant as a strong match, meaning the design reads directly as this animal. Durant is the Iron Ant Pokemon, an armoured ant with strong jaws. Its large body and powerful bite are closest to the bullet ant. It lives in armoured colonies.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Durant is a fictional Pokémon, while the Bullet Ant (Paraponera clavata) is a real insect. On AnimalDex the real Bullet Ant scores 32 for dominance, 18 for speed, 3 for size and 22 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is dominance.
Official category: Iron Ant Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Meet the real Bullet Ant
Paraponera clavata
One of the largest ants in the Americas, with workers 2 to 3 centimetres long, found in lowland rainforest from Central America south to Paraguay. Its sting delivers poneratoxin, a small peptide that disrupts the signalling of nerve cells.
How to recognize it
- Reddish-black body with a sparse coat of fine hairs.
- A single thick node forms the narrow waist.
- The large, squarish head carries heavy toothed mandibles.
- Diet
- They feed on nectar, small arthropods, and foraged animal matter.
- Lifespan
- Lifespans have not been measured precisely. Workers probably live for some months, and queens, as in other large ants, for several years.
- Predators and threats
- A small phorid fly, Apocephalus paraponerae, lays its eggs on injured workers and is the best-studied enemy. Birds, lizards and other insect-eaters may take lone foragers. Disturbed workers release a musky odour, make a squeaking sound and sting readily.
