Meet the real North American River Otter
Lontra canadensis
North American River Otters are skilled swimmers that hunt fish, crayfish, amphibians, and aquatic prey. Their play strengthens movement, social bonds, and water confidence rather than wasting energy.
How to recognize it
- Long streamlined body about 90 to 130 cm including tail
- Thick tail tapering to a point, about a third of length
- Webbed feet and small rounded ears
Real North American River Otter facts
- Its ears and nostrils close when it dives.
- Otters return again and again to shared latrine sites, often on points of land or beaver lodges, to leave scat and scent.
- Diet
- Slow-moving fish such as suckers, carp and sunfish make up most of the diet, caught in short underwater chases. Sensitive whiskers help it find prey in murky water, and it also takes crabs, birds and small mammals.
- Lifespan
- Usually under 10 years in the wild, occasionally around 13; captive otters have lived past 20 years.
- Predators and threats
- Adults have few predators; bobcats, coyotes, wolves, alligators and large raptors can take young or unwary otters. Trapping, water pollution and road traffic are the main human threats. Otters escape by diving.

How to recognize it
- Tiny, very slender body with short legs
- Short tail with no black tip
- Brown above and white below, the dividing line straight in many populations
Real Least Weasel facts
- Its fast metabolism means it must eat roughly a third or more of its own weight every day.
- It usually kills with a bite to the back of the skull or neck.
- Diet
- Mostly voles and mice, which it hunts by scent and sound along their runways under grass and snow. When rodents are scarce it also takes shrews, young rabbits, birds' eggs and nestlings, lizards and insects.
