How Krabby compares to the real Shore Crab
Krabby's official category is the River Crab Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Shore Crab as a strong match, meaning the design reads directly as this animal. Meet the real Shore Crab
Carcinus maenas
Shore Crab succeeds at the messy border of land and sea, grabbing chances from tide pools, mud, rock, and human-shaped coastlines.
How to recognize it
- Carapace a little wider than long, up to about 9 centimetres across
- Five sharp teeth along each front edge of the shell behind the eyes
- Three rounded lobes on the shell between the eyes
Real Shore Crab facts
- It is one of the most widespread invasive marine animals, established on coasts of North America, South Africa and Australia.
- Crabs that go a long time without moulting turn from green to red; red crabs have thicker shells but cope less well with low salinity.
- Diet
- An opportunist that eats small mussels, cockles and clams, snails, worms, other crabs and carrion, with some seaweed. It crushes or prises open shells with its claws and scavenges along the shore.
- Lifespan
- Can live about 3 to 5 years, with females generally shorter-lived than males; many die younger.
- Predators and threats
- Gulls, herons, cormorants, eiders, fish such as cod and bass, octopuses and otters take it. It hides under weed and stones or buries itself in sand, and faces an attacker with claws raised.
