How Lickitung compares to the real Panther Chameleon
Lickitung's official category is the Licking Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Panther Chameleon as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Lickitung is a fantasy creature with an enormous tongue. The chameleon, which shoots its long tongue out to catch prey, is the nearest real comparison.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Lickitung is a fictional Pokémon, while the Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) is a real reptile. On AnimalDex the real Panther Chameleon scores 24 for dominance, 15 for speed, 18 for size and 28 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is intelligence. AnimalDex also links Lickitung to the Giant Anteater, covered below.
Official category: Licking Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Panther Chameleon teaches Chameleon Aim through a branch hunter that waits before the tongue fires. Independent eyes, gripping feet, color signals, and a projectile tongue make patience sharper than panic.
How to recognize it
- Independently moving eyes that scan before commitment
- Projectile tongue strike used from a still branch position
- Grasping feet and curled tail for secure climbing
- Diet
- Crickets, flies, moths, grasshoppers, and other insects.
- Lifespan
- Panther Chameleons usually live several years in suitable conditions.
- Predators and threats
- Birds, snakes, mammals, larger lizards, habitat loss, and collection pressure threaten them. Grip, camouflage, display, and stillness help reduce danger before the strike is ever needed.

The largest of the anteaters, around two metres from nose to tail tip and weighing up to about 40 kilograms. It walks on its knuckles with the long front claws folded inwards, which keeps them sharp. Its body temperature, near 33°C, is among the lowest of any placental mammal.
How to recognize it
- Long tubular snout
- Sticky extendable tongue
- Huge digging claws
- Diet
- Ants and termites, by some estimates up to about 30,000 in a day. It feeds at each nest for only a minute or so before the soldiers' bites and sprays drive it off, so many nests are visited and none is emptied.
- Lifespan
- Probably around 14 to 16 years in the wild, though field data are thin. In zoos, individuals have lived past 25.
- Predators and threats
- Jaguars and pumas are the main natural predators. A cornered anteater rears up on its hind legs, braced by its tail, and slashes with the front claws. Road traffic, grassland fires, large dogs and hunting by people kill many more.
