Real animal: Domestic Cat

Mewtwo is not a real animal in any sense: in the Pokémon story it is a genetically engineered clone created from the DNA of Mew, then altered to make it more powerful. That artificial origin is why it has no single animal counterpart.

Its body still borrows from real animals. The rounded head, short ear-like horns, three-fingered paws and digitigrade legs (standing on its toes, like a cat) give Mewtwo a strongly feline look, and it inherits that cat-like shape from Mew. The thick, muscular tail and upright stance are often compared to a kangaroo, which uses its tail as a counterweight and a prop when standing.

The tube running from the back of its head to its spine has no animal equivalent and is usually read as part of its laboratory design. The fairest answer is that Mewtwo is a feline humanoid: a cat-like body plan with kangaroo-like proportions, built around a science-fiction idea rather than one species.

How Mewtwo compares to the real Domestic Cat

Mewtwo's official category is the Genetic Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Domestic Cat as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Mewtwo is a genetically engineered psychic humanoid cloned from Mew. Its head, ears and digitigrade legs read as feline, and its thick tail and upright stance are often compared to a kangaroo.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Mewtwo is a fictional Pokémon, while the Domestic Cat (Felis catus) is a real mammal. On AnimalDex the real Domestic Cat scores 42 for dominance, 55 for speed, 26 for size and 44 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is speed. AnimalDex also links Mewtwo to the Red Kangaroo, covered below.

Official category: Genetic Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Domestic Cat

Meet the real Domestic Cat

Felis catus

Descended from the African wildcat, the domestic cat began living beside people in the Near East around 10,000 years ago, drawn to rodents in grain stores. It still hunts alone, and sleeps for 12 to 16 hours a day. Its body has changed little from that of its wild ancestor.

How to recognize it

  • Claws kept sheathed while walking
  • Vertical slit pupils that open to circles in dim light
  • Long whiskers on the muzzle, brows and forelegs

Real Domestic Cat facts

  • Cats cannot taste sweetness, because the gene for one part of the sweet receptor no longer works.
  • A falling cat twists in mid-air to land feet first, a righting reflex that is fully developed by about seven weeks of age.
Diet
Meat-based food and small prey.
Lifespan
Many cats live 12 to 18 years or more with care, making rhythm a long household relationship.
Predators and threats
Dogs, coyotes, cars, disease, larger wildlife, and unsafe outdoor life threaten cats. Boundaries matter because independence is not invincibility.

Red Kangaroo

Meet the real Red Kangaroo

Osphranter rufus

The red kangaroo is Australia’s largest marsupial, built for efficient hopping, heat management, and long-distance movement across dry open country.

How to recognize it

  • Tall upright body with huge hind legs and thick balancing tail
  • Reddish coat in many males and greyer tones in females
  • Long bounding travel with forelimbs held close to the chest

Real Red Kangaroo facts

  • The species is a strong example of locomotion built around energy savings rather than constant speed.
  • Its body plan is instantly recognizable and highly regional.
Diet
Grasses, herbs, and shrubs.
Lifespan
Up to about 20 years in the wild, though few reach such ages and drought kills many young. Captive animals have lived to around 25.
Predators and threats
Dingoes, wedge-tailed eagles, humans, drought, and heat create pressure. The kangaroo survives through group awareness, strong kicks, speed, and energy-efficient movement across open ground.
