How Mightyena compares to the real Spotted Hyena
Mightyena's official category is the Bite Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Spotted Hyena as a reasonable match, meaning the animal is clear but the design mixes in other traits. Mightyena is a dark predator with a wolf-like mane and a hyena name. Its pack hunting and sloping shoulders are closest to the spotted hyena, though it also looks wolf-like.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Mightyena is a fictional Pokémon, while the Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is a real mammal. On AnimalDex the real Spotted Hyena scores 82 for dominance, 58 for speed, 48 for size and 72 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is dominance. AnimalDex also links Mightyena to the Gray Wolf, covered below.
Official category: Bite Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Meet the real Spotted Hyena
Crocuta crocuta
Spotted hyenas are powerful social carnivores with strong jaws, efficient endurance, and complex clan behavior that extends far beyond simple scavenging.
How to recognize it
- Sloping back with high shoulders and shorter hindquarters
- Rounded ears and heavy neck on a strong front end
- Spotted sandy coat with ground-covering trot
Real Spotted Hyena facts
- Hyenas are often misunderstood despite being some of the most capable carnivores in African systems.
- Their societies offer strong contrasts with canids and big cats.
- Diet
- Antelope, zebra, wildebeest, small animals, carrion, and bones.
- Lifespan
- Adults in the wild commonly reach 10 to 15 years and some females pass 20; captive hyenas have lived about 25 years.
- Predators and threats
- Lions, humans, disease, and clan conflict threaten them, while cubs face additional risk. Social structure and dens protect, but the clan must keep negotiating power.

Meet the real Gray Wolf
Canis lupus
The largest wild member of the dog family, living in packs that are usually a single family: a breeding pair and their offspring from the past one to three years. Hunting together, a pack can bring down prey many times heavier than any one wolf.
How to recognize it
- Grizzled grey coat, ranging from white in the Arctic to black
- Tail held straight or low, never curled over the back
- Broad muzzle with relatively short, rounded ears
Real Gray Wolf facts
- The domestic dog descends from an ancient wolf population, probably one that is now extinct.
- Pack territories range from under 100 to over 1,000 square kilometres, largest where prey is scarce.
- Diet
- Deer, elk, moose calves, beavers, hares, and carrion.
- Lifespan
- Wild wolves often live 6 to 8 years, sometimes longer, making cooperation a hard-earned survival pattern.
- Predators and threats
- Humans, disease, starvation, rival packs, and injuries threaten wolves. Cooperation spreads risk across the group.
