How Mime Jr. compares to the real Mimic Octopus
Mime Jr.'s official category is the Mime Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Mimic Octopus as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Mime Jr. is a humanoid mime with no real animal body. Its name and habit of copying others make the mimic octopus, which imitates other animals, the nearest real-world comparison.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Mime Jr. is a fictional Pokémon, while the Mimic Octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) is a real marine animal. On AnimalDex the real Mimic Octopus scores 38 for dominance, 32 for speed, 18 for size and 78 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is intelligence.
Official category: Mime Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Slender and boldly banded in brown and white, this octopus of silty sea floors reaches about 60 centimetres in total length. When harassed by damselfish it has been seen to push six arms into a burrow and wave the other two in opposite directions, so that they resemble a banded sea snake, a predator of those fish.
How to recognize it
- Shape-shifting posture
- Color and texture change
- Intelligent exploration
- Diet
- Small crustaceans, worms and fish. It forages across open sand, pushing arm tips down burrows and holes, and spreads the web between its arms over a patch of sediment to trap whatever is flushed out.
- Lifespan
- Lifespan has not been measured for this species; it is thought to be short, probably a year or two at most.
- Predators and threats
- Predators have rarely been observed directly; large fish hunting over open sand are the main danger. Apart from its impersonations it bolts down the nearest burrow or sinks into the sediment until only the eyes show.
