How Nacli compares to the real Yellow Boxfish
Nacli's official category is the Rock Salt Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Yellow Boxfish as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Nacli is a cube of rock salt, a mineral design rather than an animal. The yellow boxfish is the nearest comparison because its body is encased in a rigid, almost cube-shaped box of bony plates.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Nacli is a fictional Pokémon, while the Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) is a real animal. On AnimalDex the real Yellow Boxfish scores 28 for dominance, 20 for speed, 16 for size and 28 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is dominance.
Official category: Rock Salt Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Meet the real Yellow Boxfish
Ostracion cubicus
Yellow Boxfish have hard box-shaped bodies, small fins for maneuvering, and skin toxins that can deter predators. Their strange shape is stable, protected, and reef-ready.
How to recognize it
- Body enclosed in fused, hexagonal bony plates
- Juveniles lemon-yellow with scattered black spots
- Adults duller, often with small pale spots
Real Yellow Boxfish facts
- It swims mainly by sculling its pectoral, dorsal and anal fins, keeping the tail folded until it needs a burst of speed.
- Its box shape inspired the Mercedes-Benz Bionic concept car shown in 2005.
- Diet
- Grazes on algae and picks small animals from rock, rubble and sand: worms, small crustaceans, molluscs and sponges. It has been seen blowing jets of water into sand to expose prey.
- Lifespan
- No reliable figures for this boxfish's lifespan have been published, wild or captive.
- Predators and threats
- Adults have few recorded predators. Its stress secretion, identified as pahutoxin, is potent enough to kill other fish sharing an aquarium.
