How Nymble compares to the real Egyptian Grasshopper

Nymble's official category is the Grasshopper Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Egyptian Grasshopper as a reasonable match, meaning the animal is clear but the design mixes in other traits. Nymble is officially a Grasshopper Pokémon, a small hopping nymph with powerful legs. The Egyptian grasshopper, a large species common around the Mediterranean, is a fitting real-world grasshopper.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Nymble is a fictional Pokémon, while the Egyptian Grasshopper (Anacridium aegyptium) is a real invertebrate. On AnimalDex the real Egyptian Grasshopper scores 6 for dominance, 30 for speed, 5 for size and 8 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is speed.

Official category: Grasshopper Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Meet the real Egyptian Grasshopper

Anacridium aegyptium

One of the largest grasshoppers in Europe, with females reaching about 7 centimetres. It lives mostly in trees and shrubs around the Mediterranean rather than in grass, climbs well, and when disturbed launches itself with its long hind legs and flies strongly for many metres.

How to recognize it

  • Very large, 3 to 7 centimetres long
  • Grey-brown or olive body, mottled like bark
  • Low ridge along the top of the pronotum

Real Egyptian Grasshopper facts

  • Nymphs are often bright green or orange-buff and look so unlike the grey adults that they are taken for another species.
  • Live individuals regularly turn up in northern Europe, including Britain, carried in shipments of vegetables and plants from the Mediterranean.
Diet
Leaves of many shrubs, trees and herbs, chewed with strong jaws. It sometimes feeds on grapevine, citrus and garden plants, but it lives singly and rarely does noticeable damage.
Lifespan
About one year from egg to death, of which the adult stage lasts roughly eight to ten months.
Predators and threats
Birds, including shrikes and small falcons, lizards, praying mantises and large spiders prey on it. Grey-brown colouring hides it against bark while it keeps still; if approached it leaps and flies off, showing smoky-banded hindwings before dropping into cover.
