How Ogerpon compares to the real Mandrill
Ogerpon's official category is the Mask Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Mandrill as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Ogerpon is a small oni, an ogre-like creature from Japanese folklore that wears masks, so it is mostly a myth design. The mandrill, with its vivid, mask-like face, is the loose nearest animal comparison.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Ogerpon is a fictional Pokémon, while the Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a real primate. On AnimalDex the real Mandrill scores 57 for dominance, 48 for speed, 37 for size and 66 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is intelligence.
Official category: Mask Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Meet the real Mandrill
Mandrillus sphinx
An adult male's face works as a signal of rank in this, the largest of the monkeys. The red stripe down his nose brightens as his testosterone and status rise and fades if he is deposed. In a long-studied colony in Gabon, males tended to avoid contests with redder rivals.
How to recognize it
- Bright face, canines, and social rank
- Adapted to Central African rainforests and forest-savanna edges
- Swollen, grooved ridges run along each side of the long muzzle.
- Diet
- They feed on fruit, seeds, roots, insects, and small animals.
- Lifespan
- About 20 years in the wild is the usual estimate. Captive mandrills commonly reach 30, and a few have lived to around 40.
- Predators and threats
- Leopards are the main natural predator, and crowned eagles and pythons can take the young. A group answers with alarm calls and flight, often up into trees, while adult males may face the danger with canines bared. Hunting for bushmeat kills many more.
