How Stonjourner compares to the real Reef Stonefish

Stonjourner's official category is the Big Rock Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Reef Stonefish as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Stonjourner is a walking stone circle based on monuments, so it is really a rock design. The reef stonefish is the nearest animal comparison, a creature that looks exactly like a lumpy stone sitting on the seabed.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Stonjourner is a fictional Pokémon, while the Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) is a real animal. On AnimalDex the real Reef Stonefish scores 70 for dominance, 20 for speed, 18 for size and 29 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is dominance.

Official category: Big Rock Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Reef Stonefish

Meet the real Reef Stonefish

Synanceia verrucosa

A thickset, warty ambush fish of Indo-Pacific shallows and one of the most venomous fishes known. Each of its dorsal spines, usually about thirteen, carries a pair of venom glands. Nothing is injected on purpose: the weight of a foot or hand drives a spine in and squeezes the glands, and stings cause intense pain and have killed people.

How to recognize it

  • Lumpy, warty skin that breaks up any smooth outline
  • Upward-facing mouth set in a broad, flattened head
  • Small eyes placed high on the head

Real Reef Stonefish facts

  • It has been reported to survive out of water for many hours when stranded on a reef flat by a falling tide.
  • It periodically sheds its outer skin, which clears away algae and other growth that settles on the body.
Diet
Small fishes, shrimps and other crustaceans that wander within reach. Lying motionless, it engulfs them with an extremely fast upward gulp of its large mouth, the whole strike lasting a fraction of a second.
Lifespan
Wild lifespan has not been well documented. Aquarium specimens have been reported to live around 10 years.
Predators and threats
Few animals eat adults, though bottom-feeding rays and sharks have been reported taking them. When disturbed it does not flee but holds its ground and raises the dorsal spines. People catch it for food in parts of Asia and for the aquarium trade.
