Meet the real Cecropia Moth

Hyalophora cecropia

Cecropia Moth teaches Brief Splendor through a giant silk moth whose adult life is short but unforgettable. Huge patterned wings, eye-like markings, feathery antennae, and no adult feeding make the appearance feel like a lantern with one purpose.

How to recognize it

Huge patterned wings that create a dramatic night presence
Adult stage with no feeding, focused on reproduction
Feathery antennae, especially in males, for sensing mates

Diet: Caterpillars feed on leaves, while adults do not eat.
Lifespan: Adult Cecropia Moths may live only about one or two weeks, though the full life cycle is longer.
Predators and threats: Birds, bats, spiders, parasitoid wasps, ants, and mammals threaten eggs, caterpillars, and adults. Wing patterns, cocoons, and night timing help protect a creature whose adult beauty cannot last long.
