Species principle: Stay Put
Hold the tree.
Some lines continue because the female never leaves and the male has to find her.
Female Orgyia postica are flightless. They sit on the cocoon, release scent, lay eggs on their own body scales, and the next generation starts on the same tree. The male is the only one that travels.
Species principle: Sealed Trust
Seal the work.
Some work only holds if one of you stays inside and the other never stops arriving.
The female Rhyticeros cassidix seals herself into a nest hole. The male feeds her and the chicks through a slit until they emerge. The red casque is Sulawesi's; the breeding system is the principle.

Mark the gap.
A small bright territory, clearly signed, is enough of a kingdom.
Argiope luzona builds an orb across garden and forest-edge gaps in the Philippines and writes a pale cross on the hub. The cross is both a warning to birds and the spider's address.
Species principle: Canopy Colour
Colour for the right eyes.
A signal that only a mate needs to see can hide in the same colours that hide you.
Treron vernans is leaf-green in the canopy. The male's pink nape and orange patch are for other pigeons, not for a hawk looking down through leaves.

Some bodies only work in the conditions they were built for. Wait for those.
Arion rufus travels on a mucus trail and dries out in sun. The whole feeding life happens on wet nights and rainy days; a dry afternoon is a reason to be under a log, not a reason to try harder.

Wear your own crown.
A mark that only you carry is what keeps a small population from dissolving into the next one over.
Macaca sinica is confined to Sri Lanka. The toque — a whorl of hair on the crown — is the field mark that separates it from every other macaque, and the three subspecies are already splitting across shrinking dry-zone and wet-zone forest.

Claim the corner.
A tiny claimed space on a wall can feed you as well as a forest if you sit still in it.
Oecobius navus spins a small star-shaped retreat on walls and under stones, then rushes out to wrap ants. The web is a few centimetres across. The hunt is patience plus one sprint.
Species principle: One Island
Keep the one forest.
Rarity is sometimes just fidelity to one place.
Ptilinopus eugeniae lives on Makira in the Solomon Islands and almost nowhere else. A white head in a green canopy is the island's fruit dove, not a wide-ranging Treron.
