Many Silphidae locate animal carcasses by detecting volatile chemical compounds released during decomposition. Because carrion is scattered and temporary, reaching it quickly matters. The same event that marks the end of one animal therefore creates a concentrated ecological resource that Carrion Beetles are specialized to detect and exploit.
