Each Trial is a strategy a real species uses, turned into something you can run yourself in about ten minutes. Each card says what to do and why it helps.
Trials drawn from real behaviour
What each Trial asks you to do, and what it does for you. Reading a Trial needs no account. 3.017 Trials across 2.325 species. Showing 2.281–2.340.
1Temukan hal yang macet karena terlalu sulit dikerjakan
2Lakukan hanya tahap pelunakan
3Serahkan dalam keadaan belum selesai
The Trial
Find something that is stuck because it is too hard for the next person to pick up, the unreadable document, the undefined request, the raw data. Do the softening pass only, then hand it on without finishing it.
Why it helps
Things sit untouched because the first step is unpleasant, not because the work is hard. Doing only that step for someone unblocks them at a fraction of what finishing it would cost you.
Make one thing harder to pick out today by breaking up its outline, changing nothing about its brightness or content.
Why it helps
Dimming something to avoid attention costs you the quality that made it worth having. Breaking up its outline hides it just as well and leaves it completely intact.
Take something of yours that is nearly convincing and list the three things that give it away. Fix all three today rather than the easiest one, and show the before and after.
Why it helps
Fixing the easiest tell leaves the other two doing all the damage, so your effort buys nothing. Naming three and fixing all three is the only version where the thing actually passes.
Pick one recurring minor problem and identify a likely cause located somewhere other than where the symptom appears. Photograph the symptom and the off-site cause together.
Why it helps
Practises tracing problems upstream so effort is aimed where the source exists rather than where consequences appear.
Arrange for someone else to watch for interruptions today while you work head down on one thing, and check nothing yourself for the duration.
Why it helps
Keeping half an eye on interruptions yourself means your real work gets the other half all day. Someone else watching and saying so is what lets you properly look down.
Take one problem bigger than you can handle alone and get two other people on it in the next hour. Put one of them at the end point - the person who will receive, decide or sign - before you start pushing. Then drive the problem toward them while staying in voice contact the whole time.
Why it helps
Pushing a big problem alone means it arrives nowhere and you absorb the whole cost. Putting somebody at the receiving end before you start is the difference between effort and a result.
1Sebelum menyiarkan, sebutkan siapa lagi yang akan mendengar
2Putuskan dengan jelas apakah itu dapat diterima
3Lalu kirim, atau jangan
The Trial
Before amplifying something today, name who else will hear it that you did not intend, and decide explicitly whether that is acceptable. Then send or do not send.
Why it helps
Amplifying something without thinking who else hears it is how your reasonable message becomes a problem a week later. Naming the second audience takes ten seconds and usually changes your wording.
Take a clean, empty clear plastic bottle with a mouth about two centimetres across. Offer every item from a mixed bowl of washed berries, grapes, nuts and small fruit to the mouth one at a time, dropping in those that pass whole without squeezing and setting the rest in a too-big pile beside it.
Why it helps
A quick, tasty sorting job and a snack pile ready to eat.
Take a set of things you are holding, food, tasks, opportunities, messages, and sort them by how fast each one goes stale rather than by importance. Deal with the fastest-spoiling one immediately and store the rest.
Why it helps
Sorting by importance leaves the perishable things to rot while you work on the big ones. Sorting by what goes stale first means you stop losing opportunities to simple delay.
4Yang berisi data pribadi telungkup di tumpukan untuk dicacah
The Trial
Put a recycling bin directly under the edge of your table, then sort one pile of non-personal paper such as flyers, catalogues, old drafts or packaging while holding it over the bin. Anything not worth keeping is simply released into the bin, keepers go into one stack, and anything with personal details goes face down onto a separate shred pile.
Why it helps
A cleared pile of paper, and a sorting setup that makes throwing things out effortless.
2Tanam satu biji, tutup dan siram, lalu pot berikutnya
3Selesaikan satu pot sebelum memulai yang lain
The Trial
Fill three small pots with soil. Sow a single seed in the first pot, cover it and water it, and only then move on to the second pot and then the third. Use cress, bean, sunflower or any seed you have.
Why it helps
Starting everything at once leaves you with many half-done things and none finished. Completing one small item before starting the next gives you steady progress you can see, even in a short window.
Eat a seeded fruit such as a tomato, pepper, citrus or apple and save the seeds. Rinse them, press them only lightly onto a pot of compost so they stay visible, label the pot with the fruit's name, take the photo, then cover and water them.
Why it helps
A snack that turns into a small growing experiment.
2Isi masing-masing dengan tanah dan tabur sejumput benih
3Siram, beri label, dan jajarkan bersama
The Trial
Search your home, shed, balcony or garden for three unused containers, such as old plant pots, yoghurt pots or seed trays, and fill each with leftover compost or garden soil. Sow a pinch of seeds such as cress, herbs or salad leaves into each, water lightly, label each and line the three up together.
Why it helps
Three idle containers turned into a small crop of herbs or salad.
1Ikat satu tali jembatan di ambang pintu yang tak terpakai
2Gantung rangka dan empat jari-jari darinya
3Gantung botol penuh sepuluh detik, lalu bongkar
The Trial
Tape or tie one bridge line of string tight across a doorway that nobody needs during the build, at waist height and well below neck height, after telling your household, then hang every other strand from it to build a frame and at least four spokes meeting at a centre. Hang a full small plastic water bottle from the centre for ten seconds, then take the whole web down straight away.
Why it helps
A hands-on lesson in tension and load paths that comes down again in a minute.
Take one thing that would attract interference if done now. Do it in the quietest period available today, the hour or the day when nobody is around, and do not announce it afterwards.
Why it helps
Doing something at a busy time means everyone has a view on it before it exists, and most of them cost you. The cold quiet period lets the same thing get established before anyone notices.
Place one thing today above the level ordinary conditions reach, using an exceptional moment to put it somewhere routine events cannot disturb.
Why it helps
Placing things at the ordinary level means routine events keep washing them out on you. Using one exceptional moment to go higher puts it beyond all of them.
Move one recurring communication out of the noisy channel entirely today and into a quiet one, same message, different medium. Then check it was received.
Why it helps
Repeating yourself in a crowded channel trains people to ignore you there. The same message in a quiet one gets read first time and you stop having to chase.
2Isyaratkan tiap huruf dalam diam, dua detik masing-masing
3Pasangan Anda menulis huruf yang dibacanya
4Balik kertas Anda di samping kertas mereka
The Trial
Choose a three-letter word, write it on a paper kept face down, and look up its letters in a flag-semaphore chart, while a consenting partner stands at least four metres away with their own chart, paper and pen. Holding a tea towel in each hand, signal the word in silence, holding each letter's arm position for two seconds, while the partner writes down the letters they read. Finish by turning your paper over beside theirs.
Why it helps
A new, surprisingly useful signalling skill in fifteen minutes.
Spend today in a form you do not normally take: wear a colour you never choose, and keep it on through at least one interaction with someone who knows you. Do not explain why.
Why it helps
Staying in the same form means you only ever reach the places that form can reach. One day in a different one shows you how much of the reaction was never about you.
Pick the one moment today that actually matters and deliberately do everything else at minimum effort, then spend fully on that one. Decide which it is before you start.
Why it helps
Doing everything to a decent standard spends your whole budget on things nobody notices. Choosing the one moment in advance means the thing that mattered is the thing that was good.
Name aloud the single most important task in front of you right now. Start a sixty-second timer and work only on that task until it ends: no messages, no switching, no tidying first. Stop when the timer sounds and say what got done.
Why it helps
When time is short, you tend to spread it thin and finish nothing. Putting one focused minute on the most important thing shows you how far a small burst goes when none of it leaks away.
1Sebutkan jam yang paling merugikan bila Anda di luar
2Habiskan di tempat yang lebih sejuk dan tenang
3Kerjakan pekerjaan utama di luar jam itu
The Trial
Name the hours today that cost you most to be out in. Spend all of them in a genuinely better environment, quieter, cooler or more private, and do your real work outside those hours.
Why it helps
Spending your costliest hours in a poor environment means they take more out of you than the work in them is worth. Moving those hours into better air changes what the rest of the day has to recover from.
Take something you have built up capacity for and deliberately move to a quiet place today where you cannot top that capacity up, then spend it on the one thing that needed shelter to happen.
Why it helps
Trying to do the delicate thing in the same place you earn keeps it interrupted and unfinished. Going somewhere you cannot earn, and spending what you already stored, is how it finally gets done.
Take something you have been accumulating for a while, information, goodwill, a saved position, and spend it decisively on one thing today rather than continuing to accumulate.
Why it helps
Accumulating indefinitely feels safe and quietly wastes everything you built, because the position goes stale. Spending it decisively on one thing is the only moment the accumulation was ever for.
Stop competing for a role you are not yet sized for and spend today producing in the role you already have, at volume. Make three things rather than one bid.
Why it helps
Chasing the senior role while you are too small to hold it burns years producing nothing. Producing at volume in the role you have is what makes the conversion inevitable later.
Use one safe warm-air source: a warm water-filled radiator or warm-air floor register in the heating season, or at any time of year a dark baking tray or dark cloth left in full sun on a sunny indoor windowsill for twenty minutes, windows shut and no fan running; never a space heater, fan heater, stove, lamp, toaster or anything that burns. Draw a spiral on thin paper or a paper plate, cut it out with safety scissors and hang it on a thread about 20 cm above the warm surface. Watch it turn, then move it away from the warmth and watch it slow.
Why it helps
A calm little make that lets you see invisible air currents.
Bring one thing up to where you can actually work on it today by stirring the situation, rather than reaching down into it as it is.
Why it helps
Reaching down into something as it stands means working at the limit of what you can reach and getting almost nothing. Stirring it so it comes up changes the whole job.
1Selipkan dua serpentin kertas panjang di ikat pinggang
2Berputar dan memutar badan, mata di satu titik, tanpa melompat
3Angkat keduanya bersamaan tiga kali, berhenti jika pusing
The Trial
Clear a space at least two metres across and tuck two paper streamers, each at least as long as your leg and thin enough to tear free if stepped on, into the back of your waistband so they trail on the floor. On go, use spins and twists only, with no hops and your eyes on a fixed point, to get both streamers fully off the floor at the same moment three times inside ten seconds; stop and sit if you feel dizzy.
Why it helps
A ridiculous, joyful burst of movement with a clear, visible win.
Take the part you actually need from something today and deliberately pass the rest on somewhere it is useful rather than discarding or storing it.
Why it helps
Discarding or stockpiling the part you did not need wastes something someone else is short of. Passing it on costs you nothing and often returns more than the part you kept.
Choose one cluttered shelf, drawer or desk top. Lay a single strip of paper, a ruler or a length of string across it so it is split into two halves. Sort and tidy only the left half, and leave the right half exactly as it was.
Why it helps
A mess seen as one big block is easy to keep avoiding. Splitting it with a single line gives you a half you can finish now, and finishing it makes the rest look smaller.
3Tanam tiap bagian di tanah baru dan siram keduanya
The Trial
Ease a supermarket herb pot (basil, parsley or coriander) or a clumping houseplant out of its pot and gently tease the root ball into two halves by hand. Replant each half in its own container with fresh soil and water both.
Why it helps
Two healthy plants for the price of one, and a lasting reminder of the trick.
Choose one small organising task and use a small tool for fine work and a larger tool for bulk work. Photograph both tools beside the completed result.
Why it helps
The fine work gets a fine tool and the bulk gets a big one, and the whole job halves.
Take one safe plant cutting from a suitable houseplant and prepare it for propagation, or split one bunch of cut herbs into two water jars if no suitable plant is available.
Why it helps
One healthy source becomes two chances to keep growing.
Pour about half a glass of water onto a plate and set an empty jar two steps away. Dab the pool with a sponge and squeeze it into the jar, returning to the same plate until it is dry; whenever your consenting partner claps, you must retreat to your chair before coming back.
Why it helps
A silly, satisfying game of persistence that also leaves you with a very clean plate.
Drop three coins into a tall jug or vase filled with water. Using a long-handled spoon such as an iced-tea spoon, lift each coin separately from the bottom all the way to the surface and set it on a cloth.
Ask a helper to pile cushions and folded blankets into a rough heap and tuck a coin somewhere in it with just a sliver showing, while you are out of the room. Return, stand still and scan the heap for at least twenty seconds before each move, then lift one cushion at a time until you find the coin.
Why it helps
A quiet, focusing search game that sharpens your eyes.
Improve how early you detect one recurring problem today rather than how fast you respond to it, and act at the earliest sign.
Why it helps
Responding faster to late detection means you sprint every time and still barely make it. Detecting earlier turns the same problem into a walk for you.
Have someone arrange four similar safe objects with one subtle mismatch while you look away, then turn and identify the odd one as quickly as you can. You get one guess before the reveal.
Why it helps
You turn comparison into a fast observation game and see how quickly your internal template catches an intruder.
2Pada setiap tepukan, bangkit dan lempar terbuka ke atas
3Lalu lipat kembali sampai tepukan berikutnya
The Trial
Crouch low with a brightly coloured towel folded small against your chest. A helper, or a random-interval timer app, claps or beeps ten times at unpredictable moments over about ninety seconds; on each signal, rise and fling the towel open to full width overhead, then fold back down.
Why it helps
A sharp reaction workout that trains explosive legs and quick responses.
1Perhatikan satu beban yang bertumpu pada satu titik lemah
2Sebarkan ke beberapa titik
3Pastikan tak ada yang menanggung melebihi batasnya
The Trial
Spread one load across a weak surface today instead of concentrating it: distribute the weight, the cost or the request across several points so no single one carries enough to give way.
Why it helps
Putting the whole weight on one point means it fails and takes everything with it. Spreading it across several lets you cross ground that would not hold you.
3Biarkan langkahnya bisa disesuaikan di tengah jalan
The Trial
Spread the load of one thing today across everything available rather than concentrating it, so the move can be adjusted partway instead of committed at the start.
Why it helps
Concentrating the load means the move is committed the instant you start and you cannot change it halfway. Spreading it across everything keeps the whole crossing adjustable.
Find one load you have been carrying in a single concentrated point - all of a job on one day, all of a cost in one payment, all of a worry on one person. Spread it today: split it into at least four smaller contact points across time or people, and make the first two happen before you stop.
Why it helps
Concentrating a load into one point is what makes it break through - the day, the budget or the person gives way. Spreading the same weight across four contacts carries you over ground that stopped you before.
Spread the demand you place on one fragile thing today across many points so no single one carries much, and remove the single heavy point of contact.
Why it helps
Putting your whole demand on one point of something fragile breaks it, usually the point you most needed. Spreading it wide means no part is ever near failing.
2Letakkan satu datar di rak, gulung satu ke dalam cangkir
3Diamkan keduanya selama sepuluh menit
4Tuang masing-masing ke gelas dan ukur keduanya
The Trial
Pour the same amount (about 250 ml) of warm tap water into two zip-lock food bags and seal them. Lay one flat and spread thin on a wire cooling rack as a big ear, and stand the other rolled up tight inside a mug as a round body; after ten minutes, pour each into its own cup and read both with a kitchen thermometer.
Why it helps
A calm kitchen test that shows at a glance why desert animals grow big, thin ears.
1Pasang lakban jalur sempit berkelok dengan kaus kaki di ujung
2Berlarilah di jalur itu dan ambil kaus kaki
3Kembali lewat jalur sama dalam 15 detik
The Trial
On a clear floor, tape two lines 30 cm apart to make a winding runway about five metres long with at least two bends, and put a sock at the far end. Barefoot or in trainers, on 'go' move as fast as you can along the runway, snatch the sock, turn round at the end and come back the same way before fifteen seconds are up.
Why it helps
A playful, fast-footed burst that tests agility on a tight path.
