Best time

July mornings, roughly 9 to 11 local time, gave nearly all of the author's sightings, with butterflies active in open fields and beetles on the ground.

About this place

Jausa sits on the southeast side of Hiiumaa, Estonia's second largest island, where woodland, open fields and gardens lie close together. The author logged seven species here, mostly insects: two Carabus ground beetles, Peacock and Brimstone butterflies, a Common Carpet Moth and a House Fly, plus a Common Frog. All sightings came from two days in July, almost all in the morning between about 9 and 11 local time, with one around midday. Butterflies turned up in open fields and along woodland and garden edges, while the beetles and frog were found on the ground during the same morning walks. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has been there, not a tour. You get the author's notes for each species and can message the author with questions about timing and habitats. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the list reflects a short summer visit rather than a full survey.Read more
