How Magby compares to the real Fire Salamander
Magby's official category is the Live Coal Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Fire Salamander as a broad match, meaning the animal is one influence in a largely fantasy design. Magby is a humanoid fire creature with a duck-like mouth, mostly fantasy. The fire salamander is the nearest comparison, an amphibian once believed to be born from fire.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Magby is a fictional Pokémon, while the Fire Salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is a real amphibian. On AnimalDex the real Fire Salamander scores 24 for dominance, 14 for speed, 12 for size and 23 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is dominance.
Official category: Live Coal Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Meet the real Fire Salamander
Salamandra salamandra
Fire Salamander teaches Warning Beauty through a black body marked with honest flame. Toxic skin, yellow patches, rain-wet forest walking, and night movement show that visibility can protect when the signal tells the truth.
How to recognize it
- Bright yellow or orange warning markings on a dark body.
- Toxic skin secretions that make the warning honest.
- Moist forest movement, especially during wet nights and after rain.
- Diet
- Worms, slugs, insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.
- Lifespan
- Wild adults can live more than 20 years, and one captive animal is reported to have lived about 50.
- Predators and threats
- Snakes, birds, mammals, drying conditions, roads, disease, and habitat loss threaten fire salamanders. Toxins and warning color deter many predators, but moisture and safe crossings matter just as much.
