How Sandile compares to the real Mugger Crocodile
Sandile's official category is the Desert Croc Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Mugger Crocodile as a reasonable match, meaning the animal is clear but the design mixes in other traits. Sandile is the Desert Croc Pokemon, a small crocodile that buries itself in sand to stay cool. Mugger crocodiles dig burrows to escape heat, making them the closest real match.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Sandile is a fictional Pokémon, while the Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) is a real reptile. On AnimalDex the real Mugger Crocodile scores 84 for dominance, 55 for speed, 88 for size and 42 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is size.
Official category: Desert Croc Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Meet the real Mugger Crocodile
Crocodylus palustris
A heavy, broad-snouted crocodile of South Asian fresh waters that hunts mostly by waiting. It lies motionless at the edge of rivers, lakes and waterholes where animals come to drink, then lunges from the shallows to seize them.
How to recognize it
- Olive-grey to brown back, young marked with dark cross-bands
- Fourth lower tooth shows when the jaws are shut
- Rows of rough, bony scutes along the back and tail
Real Mugger Crocodile facts
- Muggers have been recorded lying with sticks balanced on their snouts in the egret nesting season, possibly luring birds gathering nest material.
- The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, and it is protected by law in India.
- Diet
- Fish make up much of the diet, with frogs, snakes, turtles, water birds and mammals up to the size of deer. Young muggers take insects, crustaceans and small fish. Large prey is dragged under and torn apart by twisting.
- Lifespan
- Wild lifespan is not known. Like other large crocodiles it is thought to live for several decades, but no reliable figure exists for wild muggers.
- Predators and threats
- Grown muggers have few enemies besides people. Monitor lizards, jackals and mongooses dig up eggs, and birds, fish and larger crocodiles take hatchlings, though the guarding mother drives many off. Wetland loss and drowning in fishing nets are major threats.
