How Skarmory compares to the real Crested Caracara

Skarmory's official category is the Armor Bird Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Crested Caracara as a reasonable match, meaning the animal is clear but the design mixes in other traits. Skarmory is a steel-armoured bird of prey with a crest and sharp wings. Its crested head and hooked beak are closest to the crested caracara, though the metal plating is fantasy.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Skarmory is a fictional Pokémon, while the Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) is a real animal. On AnimalDex the real Crested Caracara scores 62 for dominance, 60 for speed, 24 for size and 58 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is dominance.

Official category: Armor Bird Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

Crested Caracara

Meet the real Crested Caracara

Caracara plancus

Crested Caracaras are falcons that spend much of their time on the ground. They feed on carrion, insects, reptiles, eggs, and small animals, using curiosity and adaptability across ranchlands, roadsides, wetlands, and savannas.

How to recognize it

  • Black cap with a short shaggy crest
  • Bare orange-red face skin that can flush yellow
  • Pale neck and throat with a black-and-white barred chest

Real Crested Caracara facts

  • Its name imitates its rattling call, given with the head thrown right back over the shoulders.
  • In South America it has been recorded picking ticks off capybaras and cattle.
Diet
Much of its food is found on foot, turning over cow dung, debris and loose soil with its bill and feet. It patrols roads at dawn for fresh kills, follows ploughs and fires for flushed prey, and chases vultures off carcasses.
Lifespan
No reliable wild figures exist, but adults are thought to live 10 years or more.
Predators and threats
Adults have few natural predators; eggs and nestlings may be taken by climbing mammals, snakes and large raptors. Vehicle collisions, shooting and poisoned carcasses are significant threats, and pairs defend the nest area aggressively.
