How Slugma compares to the real Red Slug
Slugma's official category is the Lava Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Red Slug as a reasonable match, meaning the animal is clear but the design mixes in other traits. Slugma is a slug made of molten lava. Apart from the fire, its orange-red, slimy body and slow movement are closest to the red slug, a bright orange-red European slug.
The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Slugma is a fictional Pokémon, while the Red Slug (Arion rufus) is a real marine invertebrate. On AnimalDex the real Red Slug scores 6 for dominance, 4 for speed, 4 for size and 8 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is intelligence.
Official category: Lava Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.
Meet the real Red Slug
Arion rufus
Arion rufus is a large European slug, orange to brick-red, that is helpless on a dry afternoon and unstoppable on a wet night. The trail is the method; the weather is the permission.
How to recognize it
- Large slug, 10-15 cm when extended, orange to brick-red
- Coarse skin tubercles, a long foot fringe
- Breathing hole (pneumostome) on the right side of the mantle
Real Red Slug facts
- It is native to Europe and easily confused with the Spanish slug Arion vulgaris, which is the more invasive of the two.
- The colour stays even when the animal is contracted, which helps separate it from some brown Arion.
- Diet
- Leaves, fungi, seedlings, decaying matter and occasional carrion, rasped on a wet surface. Dry food is not used because dry skin is fatal.
- Lifespan
- A year or more. Adults are the large red animals of late summer and autumn.
- Predators and threats
- Hedgehogs, frogs, ground beetles and thrushes. The main defence is to be out only when those hunters are less effective and the mucus trail holds.
