Every Animal Trial — page 51 of 51

Each Trial is a strategy a real species uses, turned into something you can run yourself in about ten minutes. Each card says what to do and why it helps.

Trials drawn from real behaviour

What each Trial asks you to do, and what it does for you. Reading a Trial needs no account. 3,017 Trials across 2,325 species. Showing 3,001–3,017.

Work Upwind Along the Plume

HIGH
Bluebottle Fly · Decay Cleanup

The Trial

Find one faint gradient today and follow it to its source rather than searching the area, checking at each step that it is strengthening.

Why it helps

Searching an area means covering ground that never had anything in it. Following a gradient you can already detect takes you straight there.

Work Where the Spray Cannot Land

LOW
Cabbage Cluster Moth · Underleaf Drab

The Trial

Take something that keeps getting disrupted by general interruptions and move it physically inside something that the interruptions do not reach: a different device, a closed room, an offline copy, a different account.

Why it helps

Resolving to ignore interruptions fails you the first time one looks urgent. Moving the work somewhere they physically cannot arrive removes the decision entirely.

2 minDifficulty 1

Work Within Reach of the Exit

LOW
Water Chevrotain · Hidden Escape

The Trial

Work ten minutes today within reach of your own exit, having chosen the place for that reason: a seat near the door, a task you can leave mid-way. Use the exit if you need it.

Why it helps

Committing to a place you cannot leave means you stay in situations long past the point they help you. Choosing for the exit first makes staying a decision.

2 minDifficulty 1

Workers Execute the Second Queen

LOW
Red Imported Fire Ant · Fiery

The Trial

Decide today whether one role in your arrangement admits a second holder, write the rule down, and enforce it rather than judging case by case.

Why it helps

Judging each case separately means inconsistent answers and arguments every time. One written rule settles all of them without you deciding again.

2 minDifficulty 1

Wrap an Egg in Padding You Were Sent

LOW
Gold Tail Moth · Gold-Tuft Egg Cover

The Trial

Open a parcel box or envelope that arrived with protective padding, such as bubble wrap, paper fill or foam, with any address label removed or turned away, and pull the padding out. Use only that padding to cover one hard-boiled egg until no shell shows, with tape allowed only to hold it closed; then drop the bundle from waist height onto a hard floor or a baking tray, unwrap it and show the shell.

Why it helps

Packaging that would have been binned gets one more protective job, tested with a real drop.

10 minDifficulty 1

Wrap Before You Approach

MID
Triangulate Combfoot · Strategic Webbing

The Trial

Before dealing with a volatile situation in person, secure it from a distance first: get it in writing, set the time and scope, agree the terms. Only approach once it cannot move on you.

Why it helps

Walking into a volatile conversation unsecured is how you end up agreeing to things you did not intend. Fixing the scope in writing first costs one message and the conversation stays where you put it.

2 minDifficulty 2

Wrap One Warm Mug in a Woolly Sock

LOW
Olinguito · Mist-Canopy Discovery

The Trial

Fill two identical mugs with the same warm, not hot, tap water and show a thermometer reading in each. Pull a thick wool or fleece sock over one mug and fold its top over the rim, leave the other bare beside it for twenty minutes, then read the thermometer in each again.

Why it helps

A cosy, hands-off experiment that makes insulation visible.

20 minDifficulty 1

Years Between Meals

LOW
Giant Isopod · Deep Endurance

The Trial

Build today for the gap rather than for frequency, lowering what you need between opportunities and increasing what you can take at once.

Why it helps

Trying to make opportunities arrive more often is often impossible and exhausts you. Lowering what you need between them makes the gaps survivable.

2 minDifficulty 1

Years Eating Roots Unseen

LOW
June Beetle · Night Emergence

The Trial

Take a result you are about to judge, yours or someone else's, and find out how long the underneath part actually took before forming any opinion. Ask or look it up today.

Why it helps

Judging a visible result without knowing what went under it is how you conclude you are slow or someone else is lucky. Finding out the real duration usually resets the comparison entirely.

2 minDifficulty 1

Years on the Thinnest Food

LOW
Cicada · Delayed Emergence

The Trial

Take something of yours that is going slowly and work out what it is actually being fed: the hours it really gets, the money, the attention. Write down the real figure, then either increase the input or accept the timeline out loud.

Why it helps

Slow progress feels like a character failure until you count the hours it is actually getting. Seeing the real figure either shames you into raising it or frees you from a deadline that was never possible.

2 minDifficulty 1

Yellow Below, Green Above

LOW
Green Tree Python · Emerald Patience

The Trial

When you move up a level today, deliberately change how you present to match the new level rather than carrying the old presentation up with you.

Why it helps

Carrying your old presentation into a new level marks you as belonging to the old one. Changing it with the move is what makes you read correctly.

2 minDifficulty 1

You Cannot Exceed Your Host

LOW
Giant Scoliid Wasp · Strategic Parasitism

The Trial

Look at what your current work is built on, the client, the dataset, the platform, the question, and deliberately attach your next piece to a larger one today. Make the first contact or start on the bigger source.

Why it helps

Your output cannot be bigger than what it is built on, however hard you work on it. Choosing a larger base raises the ceiling before you have done anything else.

2 minDifficulty 1

You Have to Surface

MID
Arapaima · Air Access

The Trial

Set a visible timer and go under: work, head down, phone propped. The second it rings, surface — stand up, leave the desk, get real air at a window or door, and show the breath. Come back and show the timer reset.

Why it helps

Past a certain point, staying under stops being focus. Scheduled breathing is what makes your long stretches survivable, which means the break is part of the work rather than a reward for it.

2 minDifficulty 2

Zigzag a White Marker Across a Garden Line

LOW
Silver Argiope · Marked Web

The Trial

Choose a washing line, plant support string or guy rope of your own that is easy to walk into. Weave a strip of white ribbon, tape or reflective tape back and forth across its middle in a tight zigzag at least thirty centimetres long.

Why it helps

A line nobody will stumble into again.

15 minDifficulty 1

Zigzag Between Two Sunlit Marks

HIGH
Long-legged Fly · Aerial Agility

The Trial

Mark two sunlit spots three to five meters apart outdoors. From a ready crouch at one mark, sprint in short bursts to the other, changing direction with a sharp sidestep at each arrival. Complete eight one-way crossings in under three minutes.

Why it helps

You sharpen quick redirects when speed alone is not enough.

6 minDifficulty 4

Zigzag Six Markers With a Midway Spin

HIGH
Commerson's Dolphin · Patchwork Dolphin Play

The Trial

On grass, set six shoes or cones in a line a big step apart. On a helper's surprise go, weave through them, passing each on the opposite side to the last, do one full spin after the third marker, and cross the finish within ten seconds.

Why it helps

Ten seconds of agile fun that sharpens footwork and balance.

3 minDifficulty 4

Zip the Whole Surface

MID
Domestic Duck · Steady Buoyancy

The Trial

Find something that leaks, drafts, spills or escapes, then fix it by closing the gaps rather than adding a coating: overlap the edges, seal the seam, line things up. Show the leak, the closing, and the test proving it holds.

Why it helps

Your instinct is to add a layer over a problem, which wears off and needs redoing. Closing the gaps properly fixes it once and keeps working without maintenance.
