How Corphish compares to the real Red Swamp Crayfish

Corphish's official category is the Ruffian Pokémon. AnimalDex rates its resemblance to the Red Swamp Crayfish as a strong match, meaning the design reads directly as this animal. Corphish is a crayfish with large claws, and it is an introduced invader in its region. The red swamp crayfish, an invasive crayfish in Japan, is the clear match.

The comparison covers looks and behavior cues, not biology: Corphish is a fictional Pokémon, while the Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a real animal. On AnimalDex the real Red Swamp Crayfish scores 19 for dominance, 18 for speed, 7 for size and 20 for intelligence, out of 100, so its strongest trait is intelligence.

Official category: Ruffian Pokemon. This page is an AnimalDex comparison for real-animal resemblance, not an official design-origin claim.

  • Black wedge-shaped stripe along the top of the tail

Real Red Swamp Crayfish facts

  • It is the main crawfish of Louisiana, farmed on a large scale in flooded rice fields and ponds.
  • Deliberate introductions for farming and the aquarium trade have made it one of the most widespread invasive freshwater animals in the world.
Diet
An opportunistic omnivore that eats rotting plant matter, water plants, algae, snails, insect larvae, worms, tadpoles, small fish and carrion. It walks the bottom picking at food with its small front legs and seizes larger items with the claws.
Lifespan
Usually 1 to 2 years in the wild; some individuals, especially in captivity, have been reported to live about 4 to 5 years.
Predators and threats
Herons, egrets, ibises, raccoons, otters, turtles and fish such as bass, catfish and gar all eat it, and people harvest it in large numbers. Threatened, it raises its open claws toward the attacker or escapes backwards with a rapid flip of the tail.
