Real Red Swamp Crayfish facts

  • It is the main crawfish of Louisiana, farmed on a large scale in flooded rice fields and ponds.
  • Deliberate introductions for farming and the aquarium trade have made it one of the most widespread invasive freshwater animals in the world.
Diet
An opportunistic omnivore that eats rotting plant matter, water plants, algae, snails, insect larvae, worms, tadpoles, small fish and carrion. It walks the bottom picking at food with its small front legs and seizes larger items with the claws.
Lifespan
Usually 1 to 2 years in the wild; some individuals, especially in captivity, have been reported to live about 4 to 5 years.
Predators and threats
Herons, egrets, ibises, raccoons, otters, turtles and fish such as bass, catfish and gar all eat it, and people harvest it in large numbers. Threatened, it raises its open claws toward the attacker or escapes backwards with a rapid flip of the tail.
