How to identify a Shield & Stink Bug
- Broad flattened shield-shaped body with a large triangular scutellum
- Strong smell released immediately when handled
- Five-segmented antennae and a piercing beak folded under the head
- Nymphs are rounder than adults and often boldly patterned
Why Shield & Stink Bug are interesting
- The smell comes from aldehyde mixtures in metathoracic glands, released in a fraction of a second when the bug is seized.
- Some species guard their egg batches and newly hatched nymphs, which is unusual among true bugs.
- Nymphs cluster tightly after hatching, which concentrates the chemical signal and makes the group harder to sample.
- The mouthparts are a piercing beak โ most species feed on plant sap, but a number are predators of caterpillars and beetle larvae.
- Pentatomoidea is a large superfamily found on every continent except Antarctica.

05
Why this diet?
Mostly plant sap taken through the beak from stems, leaves and developing fruit, though some are predatory on soft-bodied insects. Feeding is slow and exposed, which is precisely the situation the chemical defence is for.
06
Activity, rest, and lifespan
Active by day on vegetation, sheltering low in leaf litter or bark crevices at night, and many species overwinter as adults in dense aggregations.
One year for most species, with adults of some overwintering and reappearing in spring.
07
Shield & Stink Bug reproduction
Eggs are laid in neat regular batches on the underside of leaves, often in a precise grid. In several species the female stands over the batch and the newly hatched nymphs until they disperse.
Males and females are similar; females are usually slightly larger and broader, and the sexes are separated reliably only by the shape of the abdomen tip.
08
Predators, threats, and defense
Birds, spiders, assassin bugs and parasitoid wasps. Most vertebrates learn after one attempt, which is what makes an unpleasant-but-harmless defence work; parasitoid wasps, which attack the eggs, are unaffected by it.
