Estonia has one of the densest brown bear populations in Europe in the Alutaguse forests, several hundred lynx, wolves, moose, wild boar and raccoon dogs across the whole country, and grey and ringed seals in the shallow Väinameri between Hiiumaa and the mainland. Spring brings tens of thousands of barnacle geese and whooper swans to Matsalu and the Hiiumaa bays.
Estonia is half forest, a fifth bog and almost empty of people outside Tallinn, which is why it has become the easiest place in Europe to photograph a wild brown bear. Bear hides in the Alutaguse National Park in the north-east book out months ahead for June and July, and the same forests hold lynx, wolves and the Siberian flying squirrel at the western edge of its range.
The west coast and islands are the other half of the story. Hiiumaa, where all the Estonian AnimalDex captures so far were made, has seal haul-outs on its outer islets, enormous spring gatherings of swans and geese in Käina Bay, and quiet beaches where oystercatchers and terns nest. Users there have logged common frogs, brimstone butterflies, ground beetles, field crickets and harvestmen, the small wildlife of a Baltic summer.
Kenapa lokasi ini penting
Halaman lokasi yang baik menjelaskan kenapa tempat ini layak dikunjungi, bukan hanya nama-nama yang cocok dimasukkan ke checklist destinasi.
Estonia keeps carnivores at densities western Europe gave up long ago, with roughly 900 bears, several hundred lynx and a managed wolf population in a country the size of Denmark. The wolf was named Estonia's national animal in 2018, and the country was until recently the best in Europe for seeing a lynx.
The islands are also a Baltic seal refuge. Grey seals breed on the ice and islets off Hiiumaa and Saaremaa, and the small Baltic ringed seal population survives in the Väinameri and Gulf of Riga, where boat trips from Hiiumaa in summer can find both.

Tips spotting
Tips ini dibuat agar halaman ini benar-benar berguna di lapangan, bukan hanya enak dibaca di layar.
- 01Book an Alutaguse bear hide for June or early July, arrive by late afternoon and stay until morning; bears come to the clearing most reliably in the first and last hours of light.
- 02On Hiiumaa drive the Käina Bay causeway and the Orjaku birdwatching tower at dawn in April for swans and geese, then check the islets off Sõru and Kõpu for seals with a telescope.
- 03Soomaa is best during the fifth season flood in late March or April, when moose and boar are pushed onto the higher ground along the Riisa boardwalks.
- 04Estonian summer nights barely get dark; the hour after midnight in June is when raccoon dogs, boar and sometimes lynx cross the quiet roads.
