Quick answer

Start with the direct answer, then use the sections below to see why the location matters and which animals are actually realistic to spot there.

Bangka and Belitung sit off south-east Sumatra and are known for granite boulder beaches and tin mines. Belitung has one of the last populations of the Horsfield's tarsier outside Borneo in its remaining forest, plus silvery lutungs, mouse-deer, slow lorises and pangolins, while the reefs around Lengkuas and Kepayang islands have clownfish, turtles and reef fish. Mangroves hold monitors, mudskippers and fiddler crabs, and village gardens the giant snails and weaver ants users log.

Belitung became famous through the film Laskar Pelangi and now has daily flights from Jakarta to Tanjung Pandan. The north-coast beaches at Tanjung Tinggi and Tanjung Kelayang, with their house-sized granite boulders, are the base for island-hopping boats.

Bangka is bigger, more mined and less visited. Both islands have lost most of their lowland forest to tin and oil palm, but patches around Gunung Tajam on Belitung and Gunung Maras on Bangka keep the mammals going.

Why this location matters

Good location pages explain why the place is worth your time, not just which names belong on a destination checklist.

The Belitung tarsier population is isolated and threatened by forest loss and the pet trade; a few village-based night tours now show it responsibly.

Tin dredging has left flooded craters across both islands, and coastal mining still damages reefs; the Lengkuas area is one of the healthier remaining stretches.

Spotting tips

These tips are meant to make the page useful in the field, not just readable on the page.

  1. 01Island-hopping boats from Tanjung Kelayang stop at Lengkuas for snorkelling; go early before the day-trip crowd stirs up the sand.
  2. 02Ask homestays about tarsier night tours in the Belitung forest villages and insist on red torches and no handling.
  3. 03Mangrove boardwalks at low tide give mudskippers, fiddler crabs and monitors in one stop.
  4. 04The tin-mine lakes on Bangka attract monitors and herons but the water is not safe to swim in.

Location FAQ

Short direct answers to the questions travelers usually ask before choosing a wildlife destination or zoo day.

What wildlife is there in Bangka Belitung?

What animals can be found in Bangka Belitung?
